Recruiting

We're hiring

For people who enjoy hard problems.

We're a team of professionals who solve companies' business and management challenges using the open-source ERP Odoo.

Come take on work that connects to the world, with us.

What kind of company is Quartile?

Quartile is an IT vendor specializing in Odoo. We don't stop at implementation — we stay alongside clients for the long run, through operations, maintenance, and version upgrades. What matters most to us is understanding the business before building the system. That's also why each person's work spans a wide range — it calls for a multi-skilled way of working. In both how we work and how we think, we might come across as closer to the image of an overseas IT vendor. At Quartile, what matters isn't just the skills you already have — we value people who resonate with how we work and think, and who keep learning, thinking, and growing on their own.

So, what is Odoo, really?

Odoo is an open-source business application used widely around the world. Sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, project management — the many functions a company needs all connect through one shared database.

What is open source?

Open source means a software's source code is published, and under its license terms, anyone can use it, modify it, and redistribute it. Developers around the world collaborate to improve features and fix bugs, and that's what drives the software forward. Not depending on a single company for development or upkeep, and being free to adapt it to your own needs — that's another defining trait.

OSS

Understand the internals, investigate and improve it yourself

No lock-in

Not tied to one vendor — turn to another if you need to

Global

Draw on the knowledge of users and developers worldwide

Flexible

Grow it to fit your own business, without forcing it

What is the OCA?

Open-source software is often built around a community — developers and companies organizing themselves to maintain the project, review each other's work, and keep it moving forward together.

Odoo has one of its own: the OCA (Odoo Community Association). It's a nonprofit that brings together community developers worldwide to build and maintain modules that extend Odoo's standard functionality. Through shared development, review, and continuous improvement, it keeps growing Odoo's ecosystem.

Our Odoo business

Quartile has provided Odoo implementation and development support since 2013, back when almost nobody in Japan had heard of Odoo. Through years of hands-on work, we've built up know-how spanning Odoo's features, how to put them to use, and how to implement and operate them well.

Our approach to Odoo

At Quartile, before we start any custom development, we first consider whether Odoo's standard features or existing OCA community functionality can do the job. By keeping custom development to the necessary minimum, we protect long-term maintainability and make future version upgrades easier. We also contribute the features and bug fixes we build back to the OSS community — collaborating with and being reviewed by developers worldwide, which raises the software's quality and helps us grow as well.

01 / STANDARD

Odoo standard

First, look for a way to solve it with standard features.

→
02 / COMMUNITY

OCA

Check whether the OSS community already has something usable.

→
03 / ONLY IF NEEDED

Custom

Only then, carefully build just what's still missing.

As a member of the OSS community

We don't just use the OCA's work — we contribute back. We fix issues we hit on client projects, and add features that Japan's accounting rules and business practices specifically need. Every contribution gets reviewed by developers worldwide, which is its own quality check and keeps raising the bar.

How we work at Quartile

Work environment

Working freely starts with making your own work visible — to yourself as much as to the team.

Remote & flex

Work from anywhere. Core hours are 10:00–15:00, and the rest flexes around your own life.

English

Internal written communication is in English by default. We have overseas teammates working alongside us.

Timesheets

We log our day in 15-minute increments — what we worked on, and for how long.

Using AI

We make full use of AI to work more efficiently.

Results and rewards

We look not at how many hours went in, but at what those hours produced.

MONTHLY REVIEW

We review results every month

Based on your timesheet, we look back each month at what you actually produced.

OUTCOME

Results become a number

What's logged in your timesheet converts into a monetary value — so it's the value you created that counts, not the hours you worked.

ALL OPEN

Everything is open

Compensation is open to the whole team — who earns what, and the results behind it, are visible to everyone.

What we value

Creating value. Being fair. Being open. These three are both the ideas we hold dear and the standards we hold ourselves to in daily work. We care less about the words themselves than about how we actually act on them.

Creating value

We judge value against three markets — our customers, our team, and the ecosystem our business depends on — and pursue actions that solve each one's challenges concretely and at the root. We keep asking "why," and keep improving our practices.

Being fair

We are thoroughly fair to our customers and our team. When interpretations differ, we lay out the facts and choose what is right by common social standards — giving everyone solid ground to create value together.

Being open

We keep information open and share it actively with our team, the OSS community, and our clients. Being open is what keeps us fair: it removes the unfairness that hides where things are closed, and it is how we earn trust.

Meet the team

Everyone consults, everyone builds

Listen, investigate, fix, and explain. One task, carried end-to-end by a single person. There's no clear boundary between consultant and engineer.

That said, each role does have a primary focus. We just try not to draw the line too sharply in front of a problem.

Consultant

Understands the client's problem, and stays involved all the way through to the solution.

Project manager

Sorts out what's at stake, and keeps the team and client moving forward.

Engineer

Understands how it works, deeply enough to make it better.

Quartile is a flat team with plenty of young members, where opinions are exchanged freely.

A day in the life

We walk through the real daily workflow of an Odoo consultant and a project manager.

An Odoo consultant

10:00
Start the day — a quick pass through email and the state of things.
10:15
Clear an internal-improvement task and open a pull request.
11:30
Trace a bug's cause through SQL and write up the findings.
13:00
Lunch break (until 14:00)
14:00
A backup failed — dig into a production environment to find out why.
15:30
Meet with a client to align on parts-list and inventory requirements.
16:30
Review a teammate's pull request, and read through an OCA module.
17:30
Build the fix myself, confirm it in the test environment, and let the client know.
18:45
Log the timesheet in 15-minute increments, and finish at 19:00.

Listen. Investigate. Propose. Fix.

Ten tasks touched, this one day.

No separate person for talking to the client and for doing the work.

Reconstructed from a real timesheet.

A project manager

10:00
Start the day — check email and the timesheet, and lay out the plan.
10:15
Recruiting work — look for candidates and prepare for interviews.
11:00
Check on a project's status and update tickets.
11:30
Meet with a client to align on a new requirement.
13:00
Lunch break (until 14:00)
14:00
Build a small module myself to auto-match incoming payments, and prepare a demo.
16:00
Show the demo in a meeting, and settle on how to move forward.
17:00
Sort out billing and payee details, and get agreement to move ahead.
18:45
Log the timesheet, and finish at 19:00.

Organize. Decide. Connect.

Not a role that just draws up a schedule.

Build the module yourself when it's needed, and show something that works.

Reconstructed from a real timesheet.

Rewarding, and genuinely hard

Quartile is a small organization, but each member brings real skill — a genuinely small, elite team.

That's exactly why the work isn't all easy. There are situations that call for thinking things through yourself and delivering work to a high standard.

At the same time, having colleagues nearby who do high-caliber work means there's a lot to learn just by being around them. Building experience at Quartile also builds the ability to work on equal footing with companies and engineers anywhere in the world.

What's rewarding

Real freedom and discretion. You're not just executing a fixed process — if you think something should work differently, you can propose it, whether that's a technical improvement or a change to how the client runs their own business.

What's hard

The breadth this job asks for. Beyond Odoo itself, you need real footing in business processes — accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing — plus the technical side, English, and the client relationship itself. Nobody starts knowing all of it; the range just grows as you go.

A message from our representative

Comprehensive, yet affordable and nimble. That's the kind of product that suits DX regardless of company size — and Odoo embodies exactly that. Demand for it in Japan is all but certain to keep growing.

Since 2013, Quartile has kept contributing to the OSS ecosystem while providing Odoo services to a wide range of clients. Clients consistently rate us highly on the quality of our consultation, our design and development, and our operations and maintenance.

Our way of working is agile-minded and self-directed problem-solving. We keep division of labor to a minimum, so each of us faces a market challenge directly and builds our own plan of action toward solving it. This style doesn't scale easily, but when it's a good fit, it markedly raises what an individual is capable of.

A hallmark of Quartile is that we take OSS community activity seriously. By engaging actively with the global OSS community, we help develop Odoo's ecosystem — and along the way, we learn from some of the world's top engineers the know-how we need to keep improving our service.

A small child is curious about everything and tries doing everything themselves. As we grow into adults, though, we increasingly avoid stepping outside existing frameworks — and this is especially true in Japan. That tendency helps keep a society stable, but it also makes change and innovation harder to come by.

Is there a problem you want to solve?

Is there a version of yourself you're aiming for?

Do you have the ability, but feel stuck in a siloed organization?

Wouldn't it feel good to have the power to help someone who's struggling?

Do you ever think, "I couldn't possibly do that"? Odoo is a tool well suited to driving change and innovation. At Quartile, we take on all sorts of DX challenges, big and small, every day — and plenty of them are hard to solve without Odoo. Let's unlearn the idea that "I can't do it." Working with Odoo means concretely solving the problems right around you. Build the skills, keep solving problems, and make the people around you glad you did.

This work runs deep, and you won't master it without a lot of thinking and steady, patient effort — which is exactly why it's worth doing. If you can enjoy the process of growing into it, please apply. We're looking forward to hearing from you!

— Yoshitaka Tashiro, Representative Director

Where we need help

Demand for Odoo services keeps growing faster than we've been able to grow the team. A small group is supporting a large number of clients today, which makes it hard to take on bigger projects — and inquiries keep coming in steadily, but resourcing concerns have sometimes forced us to turn work down.

That's where we'd like your help, if you're reading this page. If our way of thinking and our style resonate with you, please help us out. The work at Quartile calls for fairly broad, fairly deep skills — but if you can face the same direction and build steadily alongside us, the existing team will back you all the way.

Our hiring process

0. Casual chat (optional)

Email jobs (at) quartile.co with "Casual chat request" as the subject, and include, in the body, a few date/time options that work for you. We'll spend about 15 minutes talking online.

1. Document screening

Apply through this page with your résumé and work history. We'll follow up with the result, and if you pass, you'll move on to the next step.

2. Interviews (one or two rounds)

We'll talk online — once or twice, depending on how the conversation goes — about your values, motivation, past experience, and Odoo knowledge, and we'll speak candidly back about our thinking, the work itself, and what to expect.

3. Paid trial period

On a paid, quasi-mandate contract basis, you'll actually work alongside us for roughly 10–40 hours, so we can both confirm the fit through real work. We're happy to discuss the length and timing.

4. Formal employment

Once the trial period ends and we've confirmed a strong mutual fit, we'll move ahead with a formal employment contract.

Open positions

Odoo experience isn't a required skill to apply. What matters more: an IT-literate foundation (comfortable with Git and SQL), an understanding of common business processes, and reading/writing communication in Japanese and English.

Enjoy solving problems?
